Abandoned: Quarry in the Avon Valley

These photos were taken in January 2015

This adventure originates during a camping trip nearby, on the banks of the Avon River.

Plenty of beer was involved and I'm astounded we walked as far as we did. A quick measure on Google Maps shows an approximate distance of 2km as the crow flies from the campsite. It would have been hot and I doubt we brought enough water, if any all. As you've probably guessed - yes, we were in our early 20s.

Aerial photography and information, in general, is spotty since this truly was in the middle of nowhere. But I can tell you with extreme confidence that the quarry started operations somewhere between 1981… and 2000. I don’t have access to anything in between. Likewise, the hole stopped changing shape somewhere between 2008 and 2010.

Besides the quarry itself, there wasn't much in the way of buildings or infrastructure left. There was a cool tunnel, however, even if it was short. I doubt too much has changed in the decade since I visited, but you're not getting rid of a big hole in the ground that easily, are you?
