The mystery of the Jokers Tunnel

What was the purpose of the Jokers Tunnel? Dug 10km south of Yalgoo in the 1890s, very small amounts of gold were ever discovered considering it's over 100m long. Was the person who dug it a hopeful idiot? Or is there more to this story? Some say it was an elaborate scam and the hopeful idiot was actually a rich investor in England. Either way, this is a fantastic tourist spot to visit if you're ever travelling along the Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road.
