History: Woodman Point Munitions Facility

These photos were taken in February 2014

Woodman Point is historic for a number of reasons, but to me, the most interesting site is behind a fence. This munitions facility and dump was built in 1941 (for obvious reasons) and operated right until the 80s. By then, the population of the area had grown enough that recreational areas were required, so a new facility was opened in Karnup.

It’s quite a large site - we were walking around for hours! It even had a rail network. There were more structures near Nyyerbup Circle too, which we completely forgot to visit. While two are derelict, the third is used as the rec room for a neighbouring holiday park. I camped there sometimes as a kid, which is how I’m aware of the location.

Thankfully, the site is heritage-listed so it shouldn’t be disappearing anytime soon. Read more about it here.
